STELLENBOSCH - JEWEL OF THE WINELANDS
Situated on the fertile banks of the Eerste River in the Jonkershoek Valley, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of imposing mountain peaks, rolling vineyards and fragrant orchards - but only a convenient 28 km from Cape Town International Airport - lies the jewel of the famous Cape Winelands: Stellenbosch.

HISTORY
Affectionately named Eikestad because of age old oak trees lining the streets, Stellenbosch is well known for its rich historical heritage. Founded and named in 1679 by Simon van der Stel during the period of control by the Dutch East India Company, it is the second oldest town in South Africa. This becomes apparent when walking alongside the water furrows in Dorp Street, a national monument showcasing a gracious blend of well preserved Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture.

ACADEMIC TRADITION
But Stellenbosch is a Town for all seasons! The University of Stellenbosch, fondly referred to by its students as Maties, is internationally renowned for producing many well known leaders and public figures. Today the US still prepares thousands of national and international students for the future. Stellenbosch also boasts various other acclaimed schools and colleges.

WINE MAKING REGION OF NOTE
The oldest Wine Route in the country was established in Stellenbosch in 1971. Since then it became one of the country’s top tourist attractions where award winning wines can be tasted while enjoying the unique atmosphere of the area. Fine brandy is also distilled and matured in many cellars.

SHOPPING
Apart from the normal selection of shops and malls, Stellenbosch offers enticing art galleries, antique shops, fashion and jewellery boutiques, interesting curio shops as well as a vibrant vendor’s market.  The town forms part of the Western Cape Art and Crafts Route.

DINING
Take your pick! Lively café’s - fine dining in lifestyle restaurants offering from traditional Cape dishes to mouthwatering exotic cuisine - fast food outlets - deli’s - and of course picnics and wine tasting on wine estates. A wider and more exiting choice is hardly possible.

RECREATION: SPORT AND OUTDOOR
Home to the famous Coetzenburg Stadium, ample facilities are available for those hooked on sport, outdoor and adventure. You can hike or mountain bike in the beautiful Jonkershoek Nature Reserve while horse riding, parachuting and hot air ballooning are some of the other exiting experiences that can be enjoyed. Golfers have a choice of three top class golf courses.

Stellenbosch has a mild Mediterranean climate with rainy winters and hot summers.
